W2k8 R2 - Archive bit changed to "A" from blank after the permission is being modified
Hi, Is there anyone know how to prevent the archive bit of the folders and files being changed from blank to "A" after the permission is being modified? I don't have this problem with W2k3. Please advice. I am in pain with the daily backup job due to this archive bit issue. Thanks in advance. TonyTony Wu

you can remote A bit using attrib -A command from command line? BTW. The archive bit should not be set when you are setting permissions, have you tried using icacls to set permissions? With kind regards Krystian Zieja http://www.projectnenvision.com Follow me on twitter My Blog

Hi Zieja, Thanks for your comment. I can't do attrib -A because it will remove the archive bit for the files which I need to do backup for that day. I will try to do icacls command, but I don't know how to do icacls with some special permission setting such as I only allow to grant "This Folder" instead of subfolder with modify permission. Do you have any experience? Thanks in advance. Tony Tony Wu

I do not know what what is leveling permission, but I think you can do any permission using icacls. "This Folder" means that you want to break inheritance on subfolder which is possible with icaclsWith kind regards Krystian Zieja http://www.projectnenvision.com Follow me on twitter My Blog

Hi, In Windows Server 2008 R2, archive bit does not take effect in Backup. The entire backup system is based on VSS, which is used to tell which blocks have changed. The exact way this works has not been published by Microsoft; however from our testing we believe it to be based around using persistent snapshots and comparing differences between the snapshots. For more information, please refer to the following article: How does Windows Server 2008 Backup work? http://www.wbadmin.info/articles/how-does-windows-server-2008-backup-work.html So if you don’t have any problem with Windows Backup, you may ignore the behavior.
